“ Growing up in the wilderness of Africa has ignited my love of nature and wildlife.”
Patrick Mavros is a family business, designing and making jewellery and objets d’art for over 40 years, this established company has its roots in Africa. Founded in Zimbabwe, by my father Patrick Mavros, we are an international luxury brand with locations in London, Harare, Mauritius and Nairobi.
The original workshops and studio are based outside of Harare, Zimbabwe. The flagship store in London is well established in Chelsea, and a location in Nairobi have all gained international recognition for the brand. Marrying intricate craftsmanship with an intrepid family heritage, every piece that we make has been designed by a member of the family with the sole intention of bringing delight and showcasing the very best of African luxury. Each piece is designed by a member of our family, I studied jewellery design at Edinburgh University and then worked in Milan for the Richemont group before moving to Mauritius.
Why did you choose Mauritius to set up the atelier and your new home?
My family had been coming to Mauritius on holiday for years, we enjoyed the multicultural aspect of the island, the nature and uniqueness of the wildlife and the Indian Ocean coastal environment. Mauritius has a strong manufacturing sector, and the know-how in the jewellery industry, it was the perfect location in Africa to build our Atelier and to expand our designs inspired by the sea.
Your atelier is very unique and interactive. Why did you choose to have it as such?
With the Atelier, we’ve created an interactive shopping experience where people can see behind the scenes and engage with us. For us- as artists and jewellery makers, the process is as beautiful as the pieces themselves, the life and soul of these pieces are born in the making of them.”
Patrick Mavros opened its doors to an impressive showroom, in the heart of the Beau Plan historical sugar estate, next door to Adventure du Sucre in June 2018. The Patrick Mavros Atelier experience is a fascinating journey of high craft and curiosities, offering the epitome of industrial chic combined with innovative design. The Patrick Mavros Atelier in Mauritius brings to life a historic 180 year old metal foundry. A unique concept with an open plan atelier gives visitors the opportunity to be guided through the stages of the craft, from wax modeling, to lost wax casting through to stone setting.
Most of your pieces are made of Silver with other gemstones. Why silver? Our business started off using sterling silver. We specialize in sterling silver objet d’arts and sculpture using the lost wax casting technique and hand fabrication. My wife Kate and I, who is also a jewellery designer, launched the first Patrick Mavros collection that incorporated gemstones and mixed 18ct gold and silver when we launched our Sea Urchin Collection in 2014.
What are your plans for Patrick Mavros for the next 3 years?
Love pervades everything connected with our business, from the design and production of our works of art to the care and attention given to serving our customers and friends and, of course, our love of Africa. Our future plans include more high jewellery pieces incorporating coloured stones and diamonds, we are looking to formally announce a sustainable practice in our manufacturing process and also launch Engagement and Wedding Collections. We are also expanding locations in Africa and the Indian Ocean.
